The first piano in Hibiya Public Hall, the Blthner piano, served for about 20 years and was replaced by a New York-made Steinway in 1952. It was first played by Cortot, followed by Gieseking, Kempff, Wolff, Oborin, Gilels, and others.
The public hall’s piano has been updated several times since then, but the Hamburg Steinway D-full concert piano, introduced in 1965, was donated free of charge to the island of Kozushima in the Izu Islands in April 1995. The piano is currently in the Kozu Junior High School gymnasium, playing a very active role in everything from school music recitals to concerts by international pianists. The piano also bears the commemorative signatures of nine prominent pianists who performed at the public hall, including Rudolf Serkin and Nikolai Petrov.
