Completion of the Public Hall and Opening Ceremony

Completion of the Magnificent Public Hall in Modern Gothic Style

Five years passed since the building application was submitted. In August 1927, the official construction of the new hall began, and in October 1929, the hall was opened to the public.

The design was the result of a prize competition among eight prominent architects in 1922, and the proposal by Koichi Sato, a professor of engineering at Waseda University, was selected for the building. Under his supervision, Shimizu Gumi, Ltd. undertook the construction. The total area used by the entire hall is 3,966 square meters.

The underground construction work posed many difficulties because the ground was notoriously soft and poor, even for Tokyo. The above-ground work proceeded smoothly, and the foundation-laying ceremony was held in 1928. In October of the following year in 1929, the hall and the public hall were inaugurated, and the public hall portion of the building was transferred to the management of the City of Tokyo.

The opening ceremony of the public hall was held on October 20, 1929.
Children’s party was held in the morning and afternoon, and the music concert was held in the evening.
Reliefs of the revered senior Zenjiro Yasuda, who contributed to the construction of Hibiya Public Hall, and Mayor Shimpei Goto are displayed at the top and bottom of the stage.
